O'FALLON, Ill. (KMOX) — Metro East residents looking forward to recreational marijuana won't be able to get it in O'Fallon.

The city council approved an ordinance declaring dispensaries public nuisances.

Mayor Herb Roach says O'Fallon is known for safety and high-quality education. When asked how he can overlook the potential revenue, he says it's not about the revenue: it's about the community's reputation and what's best for it.

"Some studies have shown that learning and social skills are reduced by the use of marijuana."

Roach says the city will try to get a non-binding referendum on the March ballot to ask residents if they think recreational marijuana be sold.
