ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - When you've got Ozzie Smith predicting a bright future for you, you're doing something right. And he had some great things to say about infielder Tommy Edman.

During part of the third and fourth innings of Tuesday night's St. Louis Cardinals game, the Hall of Famer joined Mike Shannon and Mike Claiborne in the KMOX broadcast booth. Edman made back-to-back putouts in the top of the fourth of St. Louis' 1-0 win, then Smith made his prediction.

"That kid right there, he's going to be an important part of this organization for years to come," Smith said. "I've had a chance to spend some time with him at spring training, you know he's a smart kid, high baseball I.Q., he works hard. He does the little things, the little things that will help you win."

Edman made his MLB debut in early June, hitting .421 through his first 12 games as a big leaguer. He's cooled off since, with a .278 average, but his five homes and stellar defense at third has provided a major boost for St. Louis. The Cardinals own a three-game lead in the NL Central and own the best record in baseball since the All-Star break.

You can take a listen to their full conversation below, as the trio talked about their opinions on the shift, the art of hitting and his 10th annual Ozzie & Friends Gala & Pro-Am, which will feature PGA pro Jim Furyk this Sept. 22 and 23.
