ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Getting parents to participate in their child's education is key to the student's success.

HOME WORKS! CEO and Founder Karen Kalish points out not all parents feel welcomed at school.

There's also a certain amount of trepidation that a teacher is going to come in their home and be judgemental, but once the parent sees that's not the reason for a home visit, parents become more comfortable with allowing teachers into their homes. Kalish admits though, it takes time to establish and build those relationships, it doesn't happen automatically.

HOME WORKS! teachers are engaging parents and families with their child, with the ultimate goal of identifying problems students may be struggling with.

But as our Maria Keena tells us, the teachers, while paid, voluntarily participate in the program. One of those teachers Audrey Hammock is at Patrick Henry Elementary School, just north of downtown St. Louis.
