ST. LOUIS (KMOX)-They share a common bond - they are mothers with sons who play ice hockey.

And thanks to some hockey moms in St. Louis, the hockey moms of Humboldt, Saskatchewan who lost sons in last month's tragic bus accident, are feeling the love of hockey moms from around the globe on this Mother's Day.

Shortly after the bus accident that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team, including its coach and general manager on April 6, Shelley Woll knew Mother's Day would be a difficult weekend for the grieving mothers. So she, and others, started e-mailing other hockey moms across the St. Louis region with the goal of sending flowers to Humboldt moms for Mothers Day.

Woll says it quickly grew from there.

"Lakeville, Minnesota. Montreal, Canada. We had mom's reach out from Finland. Raleigh, North Carolina. And all these mom's together raised over $9,000," Woll says.

She says that allowed them to send 55 bouquets to Canada.

"If, even for a moment, these flowers bring a smile or some sense of peace to know that there are mom's across the entire world really, who stand with you and support you," Woll says.

She wondered if, because the tragedy is so monumental, the small gesture could even make a dent in the pain. It didn't take her long to find out. "(One mother) took a picture with the floral arrangement that was sent, next to the boy's hockey bag. She said he was having a really difficult day and this really helped to brighten her day."

Woll is the mother of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Joseph Woll, a goalie who was also a member of the gold-medal winning U.S. National Junior Team that competed in the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship. Woll is currently a sophomore playing at Boston College. His .915 save percentage was 26th-best in all of college hockey winning percentage of .621 (17-10-2) is 18th in the country.
