WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. (KMOX) — A Webster Groves Police Officer is in stable condition after being shot on Interstate 44 by Elm.
St. Louis County Police Sergeant Ben Granda says police had received a call for a stranded motorist on the left-hand median. Two police cars responded, when the officer exited his car, the suspect got out of his car and opened fire on the officer, who returned fire and killed the suspect.
The 36-year old officer was hit several times in his vest and arm but was able to put a tourniquet on himself. Another officer took him to the hospital.

KMOX's Kevin Killeen was at the scene. He saw more than a dozen marked police cars on the highway, including the big St. Louis Crime Lab van. Officers could be seen walking along the highway in the drizzling rain.

Police want to talk with anyone who may have been on I-44 near Elm around 8:20 last night. The highway was closed until about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
