Next Step in New Downtown O'Fallon to Open by Late Summer

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - O’Fallon Illinois city leaders’ masterplan for its downtown continues to unfold.

It began with the Destination O’Fallon initiative launched a few years ago to promote economic development. The family sports park was the first part of that plan to bring business into O’Fallon Illinois. City administrator Walter Denton says the community event space, plaza and parking lot is the next step.

The city council approved a $1.4 million contract to build it on what is now a parking space area owned by the city so not much demolition or preparation is needed.

“We think they’ll begin construction probably mid to late May, and 90 days or so for construction, so we think by the end of the summer it will be ready to go and we can have some late summer, early fall, maybe farmers’ markets and festivals or something,” he says.

Denton says the outdoor pavilion space will be serve both indoor and outdoor events and be able to be used for nine months out of the year.  He says residents and downtown business owners wanted a space to hold events that didn't require porta-potties, closing streets and losing the already limited parking.
