Nursing Becoming More Diverse, but Still Lacking Entry Level Students, Nurses

May 07, 2018 - 9:14 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This week is National Nurses Week, and experts say the nursing profession is becoming more diverse.

Patti Kelley, Vice President of Nursing at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital, says the increasing use of new technologies may be drawing more men.

"Ten or fifteen years ago, it was maybe a second choice for a lot of men, and we’ve started to get some men into the profession. Now it’s become first choice for quite a few men," he says.

Kelley says nursing schools are still struggling to keep up with demand for entry-level nurses as more experienced nurses move into specialties and as schools struggle to find qualified instructor to teach while potential nursing students weigh the cost of education.
