ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A historic St. Louis bridge is set to reopen later this week.

The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge -- now used for pedestrians and cyclists -- has been closed since mid-March for repairs to the substructure of the bridge deck.

Ben Grossman, Director of Greenway Operation for Great Rivers Greenway says they've been updating the 90 year old structure in stages over the last several years.
"In this round of maintenance we focused primarily on some concrete repair," says Grossman, "so it's concrete repair to the deck itself and to some of the piers."

He says the span is due for another engineering inspection to see what future maintenance will be necessary.

Even with spring rains, work is on schedule and the Old Chain of Rocks is set to reopen this Friday, May 3rd to regular foot and bike traffic for the peak summer tourist season.

The bridge closed to automotive traffic in 1968.  It was restored and reopened as part of the region's trailways in 1999.
