Police Body Camera Pilot to be Launched "Shortly", Mayor Says

July 18, 2018 - 9:00 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's now been nearly a year since the use of body cameras was authorized for St. Louis city police officers, yet they're still working the streets without the body cams.

So what's the hold-up?

Mayor Lyda Krewson told KMOX's Hancock and Kelley that a pilot program would be launched "shortly", in her words.

She says that would involve 25-to-30 officers at first, which she calls a move in the right direction.

But she adds that outfitting the whole force is a "very expensive proposition".

“It’s not just about getting the body cameras, it’s about the data, it’s about the cyber-security, it’s a about the servers that are required and so I would not call that imminent,” she says.

Mayor Krewson said at the moment their hands are full with trying to upgrade police radios and computers.
