ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Police are investigating the death of an inmate, rushed to the hospital Saturday in distress.

58-year-old Leon Smith had been behind bars since February, awaiting trial on a charge of robbery second.  He was taken to SLU hospital when he started complaining of chest pains. Corrections Commissioner Dale Glass says there was no sign of foul play.

“I don’t know the cause of death at this point, that will be up to medical examiner’s office. He did indicate he was in distress, having chest pains,” he says.

The medical examiner’s office won’t issue a cause of death until it gets back the toxicology results, which could take four-to-six weeks.
