St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - If you hike or bike, you'll have to detour around a popular Mississippi River bridge this spring.

It's been 20 years since the Old Chain of Rocks reopened to the public.

Great Rivers Greenway says the underlying structure of the bridge deck is in need of repairs.

The bridge will be shut down until at least early May.

The bridge closed to automotive traffic in 1968.  It was restored and reopened as part of the region's trailways in 1999.

The Chain of Rocks walking bridge should not be confused with the 1-270 Chain of Rock Bridge, which is just north of the walking bridge. That bridge however is down to one lane in the west bound direction from Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.
