President Signs Bill to Help Improve Veterans' Health Care

June 07, 2018 - 9:36 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - President Trump signs a bill into law that will give veterans more freedom to see doctors outside the Veterans Affairs system.

The goal is to reduce waiting times and improve care by steering more veterans to the private sector.

“This is bill speeds up the claims process, increases the health services, expands access to walk-in clinics and fights opioid addiction," he says.

The new law will give veterans access to private care when they have endured lengthy wait times, or the treatment at the VA was not what they had expected. The $51 billion measure builds on legislation passed in 2014 in response to a scandal at the Phoenix VA medical center where some veterans died while waiting months for appointments.
