Proposal Would Get Rid of Residency Requirement for St. Louis City Employees

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis city employees would no longer have to live in the city, under a proposal gaining traction in the board of alderman. Alderwoman Carol Howard is sponsoring a bill that would let city voters abolish the residency rule.

“I think that recruiting people that are coming in and at the entry level, 35 to $40,000, if they have a family, having them relocate is a burden,” she says.

Some city workers say the residency rule forces them to choose between living in a higher crime neighborhood they can afford, or a safer neighborhood that's so expensive they have to work a second job. The plan passed out of committee this week, and no heads onto the full board for more debate.
