Public Safety Director Urges Police to Engage the Public Following Recent Killings

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - After eleven killings in eleven days, the St. Louis Director of Public Safety is urging police officers to engage more with the public.

“My message to all of our officers has been that we can no longer be a reactive police department. We have to be a more proactive police department and try to understand who might be committing these types of offenses, who is likely to commit these types of offenses, and go out and engage,” says director Jimmy Edwards.

Edwards says the recent killings involve people who knew each other, and the murders appear related to either drugs or domestic disputes.

“I’m very disappointed and quite frankly taken aback by the number of killings, but I can say very clearly that the killings have occurred between people that somehow related. They knew each other,” he says.
