QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a western Illinois man to five years in prison for an October fire that killed his 8-year-old son and a 5-year-old girl.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports 35-year-old William G. Brewer of Quincy pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of endangering the life or health of a child. The plea was part of an agreement with prosecutors, who said if the case had gone to trial, evidence would show hand-spliced electrical cords were used to power the home. Prosecutors say one of those cords caught fire under a mattress.

Authorities say Toby Brewer and Emma Kramer died in the resulting blaze .

The children’s mother, 34-year-old Marilyn K. Kramer, is set to plead guilty to a similar charge Tuesday. William Brewer also faces charges in connection with an escape attempt.
