After enduring several blood transfusions and pneumonia in his lungs, a seven-year-old boy with sickle-cell disease has recovered from coronavirus.

In April, Nasir Striggs was hospitalized after his mother noticed he was having trouble breathing.

While at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Nasir tested positive for COVID-19 and X-rays revealed he had pneumonia in both lungs. His sickle-cell anemia put him at increased risk of infection.

In addition, the youngster had to undergo three blood transfusions throughout this hospitalization.

“He had to keep getting stuck by the needle because the needle kept coming out,” his mother Deshannon Striggs told WBAL. “To watch him go through that, it was really scary.”

After a few days in treatment, Nasir’s condition began to improve. His mother said the amazing hospital staff and people’s prayers really helped Nasir’s recovery.

“Just keep the faith. That’s the message: keep the faith,” Deshannon added.

Since being released from the hospital, doctors have continued to monitor Nasir’s recovery via virtual check-ups and disclosed he’s going great, the outlet said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “sickle cell anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body.”

While the only known cure is a bone marrow transplant, treatment can relieve pain and prevent further complications.
