Drew Barrymore is opening up about the importance of Pilates for her physical and mental health during quarantine.

In an interview with InStyle, the actress admitted that the work out is necessary to keep her body in shape, but she also explained that it makes her into a better mom to her two daughters, Olive, 7, and Frankie, 6.

“Between homeschooling and working, I felt very overwhelmed at first — and I hate feeling overwhelmed,” she told the magazine.

During the coronavirus pandemic, she said “it was weird to be a mom and a teacher and a provider and a friend. I felt sad for a while that I was all I could offer my children. Then I realized that I had to get out from under it. I have so much empathy and patience for everyone but myself, it’s sick. [laughs]”

She emphasized that everything we’re going through is “temporary.”

“It's not normal; it's the new normal. It's a learning curve, and, hopefully, this is all happening for a reason. Timing is everything — and this is not a time to get lost; it is a time to be found,” she explained.

Sticking to a regular exercise schedule also helped Barrymore take care of herself during the lockdown.

“I have to work so hard at not being the size of a bus,” she joked explaining that it’s another reason why she prioritizes her fitness regimen.

However, she doesn’t mind that she has to eat “really clean and healthy” and do an hour of Pilates “at least for days a week,” because it’s her “journey.”

“That is my karma. I don’t know, maybe I was thin and mean in a past life,” she explained.

In February, the actress revealed that it took her “45 years” to get to a place where she’s comfortable in her own skin, following the birth of her two children, adding that her weight fluctuates “up and down.”

“The rollercoaster of my body is a challenging, but beautiful ride," she admitted.

“I made two kids. The single most important purpose for me being on this planet is for them! It is a true miracle I was able to have these two girls,” she explained alongside a photo that compared her pregnancy body with her new fitted figure on the set of her series “Santa Clarita Diet.”

The 45-year-old appeared on the cover of the August issue of InStyle, which she shot by herself from the comfort of her home during quarantine.
