ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - National Republican money will start flowing to Josh Hawley's Senate campaign before he's even won the nomination.

The unusual decision was made, in part, because state Republicans say President Donald Trump has already endorsed Hawley over his 10 Republican challengers.

One of them, Hawley's Republican opponent, Austin Petersen, notes that he does better against Democrat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in head-to-head polling, which is what Republican voters ultimately want.

“They want the strongest candidate to beat her, and I feel like the Republican establishment would rather lose with a candidate that they can control, than win with someone they cannot control,” he says.

That's why Petersen says Missouri establishment Republicans are afraid of him.

“There’s a lot of people like that here in this Missouri Senate race -- they can’t control Austin, he might vote against spending bills, he might vote against the appropriations, he might vote against surveillance, or he might vote for expanding gun rights, that wild man,” he says.

One committee member called the vote a slap in the face to the grassroots.
