Route 66 Could Become the Country's 20th National Historic Trail

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - There's a push on to get a special designation for historic Route 66.

Joe Sonderman, author of several books on what is often called "The Mother Road", is all for it.

He says Route 66 passed right through St. Louis and is still a part of this region's DNA.

“It’s a lot easier to say which roads didn’t carry route 66 in St. Louis, because it’s Manchester, it’s Watson, it’s Broadway, it’s Natural Bridge, it’s Salisbury,  it's Grand,” he says.

A House Resolution to make Route 66 the country's 20th National Historic Trail has passed the US House and is awaiting Senate confirmation.  Sonderman says Route 66-related tourism contributes roughly $200 Million annually to the US economy.
