Serena Williams Brings Awareness to Post-Partum Depression

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Tennis superstar Serena Williams says she's been struggling with post-partum emotions and wants other new moms to know they are totally normal.  Serena gave birth to a girl last September and she just withdrew from this week's Rogers Cup in Montreal citing personal reasons.

The post-partum resource coordinator at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital is Kim Martino Sexton.

“It’s very common. The statistics right now say 1 in 7 will develop some sort of, we call it perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and postpartum depression falls in there," she says.

Martino Sexton suggests new moms who feel overwhelmed or depressed or sad should call the Moms Line, which offers peer support to moms who are struggling.  That number is 314-768-Moms.
