SLU Researchers Look at Effects of Keto Diet on Athletic Performance

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis University researchers put the popular keto-genic diet under a microscope.

The keto-genic diet is where a person severely restricts their carbohydrate intake while also restricting their protein intake to just a moderate amount. 

SLU researchers led by Dr. Edward Weiss wanted to know what impact the keto-genic diet had on athletic performance.

“We looked high intensity, short duration exercise, like just running down the street briefly but at a high intensity, and we found that the diet actually reduced their exercise performance during that sort of an activity."

Dr. Weiss says the ideal diet is to eat a sensible balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat and not to exclude any one of those, but eat all three in moderation.
