South County Residents Turn Out to Discuss Proposed Apartment Construction

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Residents packed a hearing last night for a controversial development in south county.  It's a series of apartment buildings that would go on what's now a wooded lot in the 6900 block of Lindbergh.

Neighbor Stephanie Pizzella says she's a millennial, the supposed target market for these apartments.

“I don’t know a single person my age who would dump over $1000 a month on an apartment that sits on top of a highway, when they could easily own a home in a family friendly neighborhood for the same amount of money,” she says.

Developer Kent Evans addressed her concerns, saying once inside the building, you can’t hear the highway. Others worried about losing green space, but Laura Toledo says people, like her, leave South County because it doesn't have the housing they want.

“When I graduated from college I lived with my grandparents in South County, wanted my own apartment, and moved into the city. And I’ve stayed central corridor because of the retail and residential mix that I think is very attractive. And I think south county is missing that,” she says.

The developer says these apartments would have modern amenities that others in the area don't have, although the example they showed had more traditional architecture. Planning commissioners only heard public feedback and didn't take a vote.
