St. Charles Sues Pharmaceutical Industry for Opioid Crisis

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Saying that just about every family in the county has been touched by it, St. Charles County is suing the pharmaceutical industry for what it says is its role in the opioid crisis.

County Executive Steve Ehlman says those companies have aggressively marketed prescription opioid painkillers, leading to the epidemic that has claimed 300 lives in the county over the past four years. He says the suit seeks damages to cover the county's costs in battling the crisis.

"We spent a lot of money training our people, we have sent a lot of taxpayer money providing the narcan, and of course we not only provide it to our police officers but we also provide it to sheriffs who are bailiffs in the courts and also to our correctional officers," he says.

Ehlmann says they have a good idea what that cost is, but he isn't releasing it yet.
