St. Louis Congressman Fights ICE on Behalf of Potential Deportee

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A St. Louis area congressman is petitioning Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, in hopes he can help a native Honduran from being deported.

Alex Garcia came here to flee violence 13 years ago. He was granted stays of removal in 2015 and 2016, but not last year. Clay, in a letter to ICE, says he wants another stay for at least a year so Garcia can be reunited with his wife and five children.

“Deporting Alex would do nothing to protect our national security but it would destroy a strong family and subject this good and decent man to terror, violence and perhaps death,” he says.

Clay says an "armed death squad" recently killed one of Garcia's relatives in Honduras. Garcia has been given refuge in a Maplewood church for the last ten months which has caused problems for his family, who rely on him for financial support and emotional stability. Garcia's described as a popular businessman from Poplar Bluff who poses no safety threat.
