Game with a Loaded Revolver Leads to Officer's Death

January 25, 2019 - 5:50 pm

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Two St. Louis police officers, a man and a woman, were playing a kind of Russian Roulette, when one of them shot and killed the other.

Officer Nathaniel Hendren, 29, is charged with involuntary manslaughter first-degree and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Officer Katlyn Alix, 24.

Alix was off-duty when she met with Hendren and his police partner at Hendren's apartment in the 700 block of Dover shortly before one o'clock Thursday morning.

Charging documents say Alix and Hendren were playing with firearms when Hendren got out a revolver.

He put one bullet in, spun the cylinder, pointed the gun away – and pulled the trigger.

The gun did not fire.

Alix then took the gun and pointed it at Hendren and pulled the trigger.

The gun did not fire.

Hendren took the gun back and pointed it at Alix and pulled the trigger.

The gun went off.

The two officers rushed Alix to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Hendren was so upset by the shooting, he reportedly banged his head to the point of bleeding on an SUV window. Sources say he's on a suicide watch at a local hospital, which explains he's charged with an "at large" warrant, rather than under arrest.

Charging documents say the other officer who was in the apartment had stepped out the living room just before the shooting. He had told Hendren and Alix that they shouldn't be playing with guns and that they were police officers.

It's not clear whether he could face charges.

Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner says the investigation will continue.
