St. Louis Start-Up Raises $50 Mil. to Expand Online Tutoring

February 14, 2018 - 9:56 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Big news about a St. Louis start-up that's growing up. Varsity Tutors this morning is announcing it raised a $50 million "Series C round" from investors who think it's on the right track to "redefine learning."

Founder and CEO Chuck Cohn says these aren't in-person tutors meeting at the library anymore. The company is pushing the use of "real-time matching".

"Students can click a button and go from click to a live session with an instructor in 150 different subjects in about 15 seconds, on average. One of our goals is to improve the instant liquidity in those 150 subjects and expand it more," he says.

Cohn says that could even include music lessons or technical training, done via live, instant, two-way webcam.  Those investors who want in on this include the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, TCV and Learn Capital.

"We'd like to take the platform that we've built in the United States with one-on-one tutoring and expand it to international markets and the categories outside of tutoring," he say.
