ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis County health officials have confirmed that a local teen was sickened by tainted romaine lettuce.

Health Department Director Faisal Khan tells KMOX that it's not clear how Stephanie Ingberg came into contact with the tainted lettuce, but notes it is an isolated case.

“What’s important to remember is that the universal precautions applicable to fresh food and produce do apply. Please listen to the warnings being issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; please listen to the news,” Khan says.

The teen's family believe she made have been exposed by eating a bad salad.

She ended up in intensive care, but is now recovering.
