Stockley's Attorney Explains Lawsuit; Activists React

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The attorney for Jason Stockley is explaining why the former St. Louis police officer is filing suit against the former St. Louis circuit attorney and a police lieutenant who handled his investigation.

Dan Finney appeared on the Charlie Brennan Show and said he has evidence to prove Stockley should never have been charged in 2016 for the 2011 shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Finney said his client was found "not guilty" in 2017 and moved out of Missouri but still lives in fear.

“It’s terrible. Ever since he was accused of delivering an 'execution shot' his life in danger, he’s been on the internet as murderer. If you punch up Jason Stockley online, all you see is murderer and things like that,” he says.

Finney said he'll be holding a news conference Friday to lay out all the details behind the new lawsuit and his willingness to meet with Black Lives Matter leaders.

“True information has to be given to these people so they can assess it for themselves, not just Black Lives Matter, but any group that’s interested and agitated by what they perceive to be a problem,” he says.

The suit is getting a reaction from the community of protestors who follow police shootings. Susie Chasnoff is with the group Citizens Against Police Crimes and Repression.

“My jaw dropped. I was stunned. I think that his interest is in getting a job and he can’t get a job, he’s having difficulty getting a job in Texas because of this, and I think that that’s his Karma,” she says.

The Rev. Daryll Gray with the Ethical Society of Police says the lawsuit shows Stockley "continues to thumb his nose at justice."

State Rep. Bruce Franks says he can't believe it.

“I think he’s an idiot. I have no more reaction and really no more words for Jason Stockley. I think the more we talk about him the more we empower him to do dumb stuff like this. He’s an idiot,” he says.
