Study Finds Increase in National Numbers Following Celebrity Suicides

June 06, 2018 - 9:40 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The apparent suicide of fashion designer Kate Spade raises awareness of a spike in the national suicide rate following the suicide of a celebrity.

Robin Williams committed suicide in August of 2014.  A recent study analyzed the U.S. suicide rate over the next six months and found a nearly 10 percent increase in the traditional number of suicides.

The numbers were just about the same among genders, with a 9.1 percent higher rate of suicide among men and a 9.7 percent higher suicide rate among women.  The biggest jump in suicide rate over that period was in the 30 to 44 year old age group, up nearly 13 percent over the expected number of suicides.
