Suspense Builds Around EPA Landfill Announcement

August 20, 2018 - 10:04 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Suspense is building around the radioactive Westlake Landfill, as Bridgeton residents wait for the EPA's final decision on the cleanup.  Dawn Chapman of the group Just Mom's hope they decide to go beyond the original plan to remove 70 percent of the waste.

“When they come out with this decision, they have got to be more transparent. They have to come out and say why they can’t dig, what the risks are. We are owed more than explanation of just ‘hey we’re not going to go more than 16 feet,” she says.

Chapman says the community is also hoping the EPA will announce that the dug-up waste will be shipped someplace else, not stored on site in a containment vessel.

A final announcement is expected September 30th.
