CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of a St. Louis County woman who was killed in front of her three young children.

Porsha Owens was shot Monday as she led her children to her car to take them to day care. She worked as a school safety officer in a nearby school district.

It's one of the saddest cases he's ever been involved with, says St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch.

He announced charges Wednesday against Mark L. Haywood in Monday morning's shooting death of 28-year-old Owens.

McCulloch says Haywood was hanging around waiting for Owens to come out so he could steal her Dodge Charger.

Haywood was arrested the day after the murder at his home about a block-and-a-half from the crime scene.

He faces multiple counts, including second-degree murder and robbery. He is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.

Owens' three children who witnessed the attack are aged 3 to 8 years. They were unhurt.

Police say she was the victim of a failed carjacking. The gunman demanded her keys and money, but couldn't start the vehicle and ran away.
