'Tobacco 21' Initiative Looks to Raise Smoking Age in Ill.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) - An Illinois Senate Committee is advancing a measure to raise the smoking age.
The "Tobacco 21" initiative makes it illegal to sell tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under 21.

State Senator Julie Morrison is the sponsor.
"We know that of all the current smokers today, that nine out of 10 of those current smokers began as teenagers," Morrison says. "I believe it's time for Illionis to take this action."
Critics say the bill addresses only the sale of tobacco products -- not possession.

It now moves on to the full Senate for a vote.
