Take a break from the snark. Lay off the horn. Today is World Kindness Day.

Dr. Dan Haybron, Professor of Philosophy at St. Louis University, says anything that can get people focusing more on kindness is a good thing, especially in today's climate.

"We pick up on the state of mind of the people around us," Dr. Haybron told KMOX's Debbie Monterrey. "A good mood can lift the people around you, a bad mood can bring them down. There are people who are emotional radiators and when they have a bad day, everyone around them has a bad day."

He says research shows the benefits of kind acts.

"One of the great things about kindness is not only does it benefit the person doing the act of kindness, and the recipient of kindness, but witnesses watching it get a huge uplift from [kindness]."

Haybron also says kindness is an important part of relationships with other people and time and again, research shows good relationships are the key to happiness, as we are social creatures.
