Missouri State Championship Track meets postponed due to tornado damage in Jefferson City

Public safety officials are warning people who are not in the impacted areas to stay away from

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (KMOX) - The Missouri State High School Activities Association is postponing this weekend's State Tack and Field Championships in Jefferson City after a violent tornado swept across the state, killing three people and leaving many people trapped in the wreckage of their homes overnight Wednesday.

The MSHSAA Twitter account announced the postponment of the Class 3, 4, and 5 championships Thursday morning, as state public safety officials warned people to stay away from the impacted areas if possible. The meets are being held at Jefferson City High School, which was partially damaged due to last night's severe storms.

MSHSAA says they will have an update with more information today.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been warning the public to stay away from the area if you are no affected. The Missouri Department of Public Safety says it has already witnessed a vehicle accident due to a driver "rubbernecking."
