A True St. Louis Roster Leads SLU for 1st Round Matchup With KU

The Billikens' 18 wins are the most among any D-1 women's team this season.

November 08, 2018 - 3:56 pm

They left for Lawrence, Kan. on Wednesday afternoon as the first Saint Louis University Women's Soccer team since 2005 to reach the NCAA Tournament First Round.  Before they departed, our Chris Hrabe spoke to a few of the Billiken's who have spent their entire soccer careers in St. Louis.

Senior forward Maddie Pokorny is coming off a MVP award in the A-10 Championship Tournament, after netting a hat trick in the final game (5-1 win over VCU). Her 12 goals on the season are just one short of tying a single-season SLU record. The Webster Groves graduate has seen this team grow from a bottom-half A-10 team as a freshman, to a championship squad this year.

Just behind her on the scoresheet is the freshman from Hazelwood West, Hannah Friedrich who led the Billikens in points with 11 goals and eight assists.

Joining them as major St. Louis-native contributors are juniors Alli Klug (Nerinx Hall) and Courtney Reimer (Duchesne). Klug was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season and Reimer joined her on the A-10 All-Conference First Team this season.

This is the third championship tournment trip for the Billiken women, in 2005 they defeated Stanford then lost to Santa Clara and in 2006 they beat Drake before losing to Illinois.

The game against KU kicks off at 7 p.m., you can watch it live on ESPN 3.
