ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - The Missouri Highway Patrol says two young adults from Hazelwood drowned in floodwaters at Portage Des Sioux.

Trooper Dallas Thompson says they likely entered the flooded rural road along the Mississippi River after dark, "Water was over the roadway and they drove into it. The vehicle either got disabled from submerging in the water, or they may have gotten swept off the roadway just a bit and were unable to get out."

Thompson tells KMOX that St. Charles County police requested the patrol's dive team, late Thursday, and the car containing the bodies was removed early Friday.

An autopsy determined 20-year-old John Reinhardt and 19-year-old Caitlin Frangel drowned.
