JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals Opening Day roster is nearly set, as manager Mike Shildt announced a few personnel changes, Friday.

He told media, catcher Matt Wieters, outfielder Tyler O'Neill and pitcher Mike Mayers have all made the roster and will begin their seasons with St. Louis in Milwaukee on March 28.

Pitcher Chasen Shreve has been designated for assignment.

Shildt says Wieters will be the backup catcher to Yadier Molina, after he was brought into Cardinals camp just last month. He was in competition with last year's backup, Francisco Pena who went down with an injury on March 5. Pena will spend the rest of this spring with the Cardinals, then will either be released or sent to Memphis, Shildt says.

Shildt also confirmed the Cardinals Opening Day roster will have 13 position players and 12 pitchers. With the starting rotation set (Mikolas, Flaherty, Wacha, Wainwright, Hudson), there is just one of the seven bullpen spots still up for grabs (Hicks, Miller, Mayers, Reyes, Leone, Gant) and it seems that competition is between Tyler Webb and John Brebbia. If Brebbia wins it, then St. Louis' only left-handed bullpen arm would be Andrew Miller.

Three Cardinals pitchers will also begin 2019 on the injured list: Carlos Martinez, Luke Gregerson and Brett Cecil.

There are still a couple spots up for grabs as for the 13 position players (Goldy, Wong, DeJong, Carpenter, Fowler, Bader, Ozuna, Molina, Wieters, Martinez, O'Neill). It appears one spot will depend on the health of Jedd Gyorko who has been dealing with a strained calf. Shildt didn't give much detail as to his chances to be on the roster.

If Gyorko begins the season on the injured list, then both Yairo Munoz and Drew Robinson will likely have spots on the Opening Day. But if Gyorko is healthy, only one will likely be sent to Memphis.
