UPDATE: Missouri American Water says further water quality testing shows the water in the previously affected area is safe to consume.

Earlier story:

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Missouri American Water says 59,000 of its customers in St. Louis County are being asked to boil their drinking and cooking water.

A precautionary "boil advisory" was issued Saturday after a quality test in the Webster Groves area failed.

The company says reverse 911 calls went out to customers, advising them of the situation.

The affected area runs roughly from Glendale, Shrewsbury, and Webster Groves south to the intersection of 270 and 55, east to the St. Louis city border, west to 270 in Sunset Hills.

Boil advisories typically last 48-72 hours.
