ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Actress, businesswoman, and author Vivica A. Fox challenged the Class of 2018 at Harris-Stowe State University to be as driven as she has been.

"Every day when I wake up, I know that I have to make things happen. I don't count on others to bring me success. I make it happen," she said Saturday in St. Louis.

"Know that when you take the risk to build your career, you will own the reward," Fox said, recommending that graduates create a vision board for their future & be able to cross-off items as they are completed.

St. Louis' only historically black university, Harris-Stowe's 161st commencement included a record 177 graduates, many first-generation college students.

Fox told them she and they need to do their best to honor the legacy of the African-Americans who've gone before them, "Show them that through the choices and sacrifices they made for us, that we will continue to grow, continue to flourish, and continue to win."

Fox left them with this thought, "Learn to make your haters your congratulators."
