UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOX) -  The name of University City's newest eatery may cause a double take.

Wacked Out Weiner will serve Nathan's hot dogs with up to 30 toppings, along with items like loaded nachos and Frito Pie.

Franchise owner Mark Clifford, who's up from company headquarters in Foley, Alabama to help get things ready for business, says the concept is pretty straight forward.

"I mean we don't fry anything," he says. "There's no french fries. You come in and it's a hot dog joint. And there's over 500 million ways to top a hot dog at the Wacked Out Weiner."

Now, about that name.

"A lot of people are like 'Oh my goodness!'" he admits. "But the thing is a weiner....'Oh I'd like to be an Oscar Meyer weiner'...and wacked w-a-c-k-e-d is the amount of toppings we have."

The Alabama native decided to ditch his sales job and launch his dream after beating cancer.

"This concept I've had in mind for about eight years," Clifford explains. "So in 2014 I got diagnosed with cancer. I beat it, but at that point in time my wife said, 'You know what? It's time to chase your dream.' And my dream was to open up a true hot dog restaurant."

Add in Serendipity brand ice cream and beer, and Clifford says an original concept was born.

"St. Louis, hot dogs, beer, ice cream!" he says. "I mean c'mon man, you can't beat it right?"

Wacked Out Weiner will be open 7 days a week, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday, "to start out" tacks on local franchisee Tina Baecht.

It's at 6301 Delmar in the space formerly occupied by Snarf's.
