Wolf Branch Elementary Needs Debt Limit Expansion to Repair Damage

May 24, 2018 - 10:32 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -  It's now up to Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner to determine whether the Wolf Branch School district in Swansea can extend its debt limit to repair the middle school.

The middle school started collapsing earlier this school year due to mine subsidence -- all the students were moved to the, now overcrowded, elementary school. State Senator James Claybourne of East St. Louis sponsored the bill to allow a debt limit extension.

“There’s only a certain amount of debt that a school district can take on. We allowed them to extend their debt limit to be able to reconstruct their school,” he says.

Claybourne says he's not talked yet talked to the governor's office, but he assumes they'd be amenable to signing the bill.
