Red Sox Closer Almost Nailed by Beer Can at Yankee Stadium

Not that it excuses throwing a beer, but the home fans had plenty of reason to be frustrated by that point.

New York Yankees fans have been known to be some of the most ruthless fans in baseball. They'll boo their own players when frustration builds up enough. And someone in the stands really crossed a line before the bottom of the ninth inning, as Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel was leaving the bullpen.

A beer can was thrown from the stands, captured by the TBS cameras, missed Kimbrel by just a few feet. You can see the police officer nearly have to push Kimbrel out of the way.

New York mounted a last-ditch rally against Kimbrel, scoring twice in the ninth inning . But the Yankees' comeback stalled when Gary Sanchez's bases-loaded sacrifice fly was caught on the left-field warning track , and rookie Gleyber Torres grounded out with two on to end it.

Not that it excuses throwing a beer, but the home fans had plenty of reason to be frustrated by that point.

Yankees never hit a home run in two home games versus Boston. They were outscored 20-4 as the AL East champs took the best-of-five series 3-1 and advanced to the ALCS against defending World Series champion Houston.

New York enjoys wasting $12 beers apparently. There was video of fans throwing their beverages all over an Oakland Athletics fan at the end of the AL Wild Card game, last week:
