WRECKER: Say Thanks Once In A While

Do you have any expectation of politeness at a fast food restaurant? Some workers go out of their way to make your day.  Others could care less.

"It's the least they can do," was in the back of my head.  Not a good way to think about it... I know.

Maybe that's not the best attitude to have in a drive-thru, but just last week I wondered what is the least amount of courtesy someone working in fast food or retail needs to show you at the point of sale?

It was a Saturday evening, I was in the line at a fast food joint waiting my turn to pick up the sloppy and greasy meal.  It was taking a long time, but since cars were backing up behind me it was obvious everyone was blaming me for the backup.  One minute.  Five minutes.  It felt like an hour.  But when they handed me the food, they opened the window and didn't say a word.  When the window closed, I thought it was because something was missing, but a quick look in the bag revealed the goods were there.

Not a, "thanks."  Not a, "have a good day!"  Not even eye contact. What should any reasonable person expect from a fast food window?  Certainly not a high five, but maybe the acknowledgement of my existence would have been nice.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive and it really isn't a big deal, but you would have noticed too.  It makes me want to go out of my way to be nice to people on the street.  "Please" and "Thank You" go a long way.

Give a try today. Keep an open mind and try to make an effort to say THANK YOU to someone today that you wouldn't noramlly.  It's worth it.
